January 12

The morning was 39º and sunny. I am really liking the warmer weather. The heat has not been running at all during the day.

Before lunch I cleaned both bathrooms, the rabbit cage, and the goat house. They will be happy to have fresh hay to sleep on tonight. If they don’t eat it all today. 🙂

For lunch we had sandwiches, cantaloupe, and a chocolate pie that our neighbor made and gave to us. After lunch I made up another batch of granola.

In the afternoon I cleaned up the other picture that Quentin had bought at Goodwill. I got it hung up in the living room. I really like it. I think it looks like something that would have hung in my grandparents home.005For supper we had a deer roast, potatoes, carrots, peppers, onions, corn on the cob, and sourdough bread.

Once the kitchen was cleaned we settled down to watch TV.

January 10 & 11

Friday was a rainy, low 40’s kind of day.

In the morning I worked on next weeks menu.

  • Meatloaf, Baked Potatoes
  • Roast, Potatoes, Carrots(did not have last week)
  • Steak, Baked Pinto Beans(these are so good)
  • Hot Gravy Sandwiches, Mashed Potatoes
  • Venison Salisbury Steak, Egg Noodles, Scalloped Potatoes
  • BBQ, Oven Fries
  • Bean Soup

I save a ton of money by not buying anything “special” to cook for lunch. We either have leftovers, sandwiches, or get creative.

Today we had oven fries and garlic cheese toast on hamburger buns that would have been thrown out otherwise.

It was already 51º when I got up Saturday morning. It had rained hard all night, and the wind blew terribly. Our well was not working. It usually quits after a really hard rain. I turned the pump off and on to the well. It usually starts working again after that. I put buckets around the corners of the building to catch rain water for flushing toilets.

I dusted the whole house and swept and dry mopped the floors. I also got the rugs vacuumed.

Quentin stopped by the grocery store on his way home and did our grocery shopping.

After supper we had brownies and popcorn and watched Apollo13.

Got the news from Bub’s doctor today that he does indeed have Lyme disease. We are going to do 4 weeks of antibiotics to get rid of it. It is a relief to finally have an answer.

We are having a lovely 50º sunny day here! We are all enjoying the warmth.

Madison and Bub enjoying the sunshine.

Quentin surprised me with two large paintings that he found at Goodwill last night. They were only 5.95 each. I love this type of picture and hung one over the fireplace.

005Supper has been started, and it is a nice, relaxing kind of day!

The temps were much better today. It got up into the 40’s and felt warm compared to yesterday.

I got up at 6:09 this morning after hitting the snooze button once.:) Chloe didn’t get here until 7:30.

In the morning we completed spelling, grammar, and math. I was able to get the floors swept and cleaned and the fish tank cleaned before lunch.

Allie got off the school bus around 4, and the girl’s mom was here to pick them up a little before 6.

I called this evening to tell the girl’s mom I wouldn’t be babysitting Thursday or Friday. We didn’t hear from Bub’s doctor today, but we should definitely hear from him tomorrow. We are going to request intravenous antibiotics if that isn’t what his doctor is already thinking.

I am finishing up laundry right now.  The kids and I are going to settle down to watch TV and wait for Quentin to get home from work.

It was -4º here this morning. Quentin fed the critters bright and early. I carried water out through out the day.

Quentin had moved the chicken tractors with the silkies and guineas close to the house yesterday and covered them with more straw bales and added a heat lamp. They seemed to weather the cold just fine.

001I didn’t have to babysit this morning as school was closed, and it was just too cold to be out.

Around noon, we heard from the doctor’s office. Bub’s first Lyme disease test came back positive. The first test tests for antibodies that would be present if he did have Lyme disease. We should have the results to the second test tomorrow. I am glad he has already started the antibiotics.

I got all my laundry caught up this evening and even washed a couple of quilts. I want to be ready next time the temps drop below 0º. Everything is now hanging in the bathroom drying, and we are watching Saved By The Bell.

I was up at 15 minutes til 6 to get my shower. I knew my next chance wouldn’t be until 6 pm.

The girls got here around 7 and Allie’s mom waited with her at the bottom of the driveway for the school bus.

In the morning we worked on math, grammar, and spelling. Quentin, Madison, and Bub went to town to pick up a few things and brought pizza back for lunch.

Allie got off the school bus around 4, and their mom was here to pick them up around 5:30.

We had a late supper, cleaned up, and watched Antiques Roadshow.

It was a full day, and I am tired. I am sure I will sleep like a baby tonight.

It had warmed up to 36º this morning and was raining lightly. That was a pleasant surprise. The water buckets had thawed slightly so the ice chunks were easy to lift out.

I got Bub started on a bottle of water and gave him his pill shortly after. The key is an empty stomach and lots and lots of water.

Quentin got up to cook breakfast when it was getting close to the time that Bub could have some food. He wanted to make fresh tenderloin for breakfast. We had tenderloin with mushrooms and hash browns with onions.

I made up a batch of laundry soap using this recipe. I was completely out and this works great. It is also fast and easy to make. Before I made laundry soap I had to make washing soda.  I never buy washing soda anymore I just do this.

Homemade laundry detergent:

3 tablespoons of borax
3 tablespoons of washing soda (NOT baking soda)
2 tablespoons of original blue Dawn

Put the borax and washing soda in a gallon jug. I use a funnel so it doesn’t spill down the side.
Pour in four cups of hot water. It doesn’t have to be boiling, but it does need to be hot enough to dissolve the powders. I usually just heat the water in the microwave until it’s about as hot as water would be for coffee. The original website I got this from said to put the Dawn in with the borax and washing soda, but if you add it after you pour in the hot water, there will be fewer suds. Gently swish to mix and dissolve. After this cools a bit, fill the rest of the jug with cold water.

I made mine in an ice cream bucket. This is what it looks like.

001Madison made up a batch of chocolate sauce, and I let my kids have banana splits for lunch. There were no complaints. 🙂

In the afternoon, I worked on making study cards for everything we have learned in Grammar so far while I bagged deer meat for Quentin.

At 5 a lady that I am going to babysit for stopped by to meet us. She brought her two girls and her mom and dad to meet us too. I will have her 5 year old from 7-5:45. Her 7 year old will get on the bus at my house at 7:15 and get off the bus at my house around 4. They were really sweet girls, and I am looking forward to keeping them.

After dinner we snuggled down to watch TV for the evening. We are quite the couch potatoes in winter.
